Hey guys, So here is the situation. I want to be able to bring price data for stocks into excel. I have spent a few hours researching and looking for ways to do so, but haven't been able to find anything successful.
I would get the data from YahooFinance or Google Finance. From what I have seen, the YahooFinance API has changed/no longer supported? There was a good tutorial I found that did my desired task with Yahoo, but it is a few years old, and the URL used from Yahoo has changed. Other issues: I am using Excel on Mac:( #2 is that I am not a programmer, and thus don't have an extensive enough knowledge of working with VBA. If anyone has any tips that would be great.
Quandl.com and tiingo.com are both great sources of historical price data. Tiingo.com also has live market data from IEX that includes top of book and last trade. You're not a programmer, so I strongly recommend you switch to Excel on Windows to get access to the many free and commercial Excel addins not available on the Mac. For instance, quandl has an addin for pulling in data 3.
I have an open source addin 2 with ready to install binaries here 1 that can pull in live market data from tiingo and historical data from both tiingo and quandl. I've just added Google Analytics too. 1 2 3. I guess you are looking for free solutions. There exist indeed ways to do so using either native Excel capabilities – as described in the other posts – or relying on external software.
In all cases you should be aware of the following drawbacks: 1) The most important drawback is that stock prices received from most free providers are anything but real time. Generally they can be up to 20 minutes delayed. 2) The built-in WEBSERVICE Excel formula is synchronous to Excel’s main UI thread, which means it will cause Excel to hang until it returns.
This might not be an issue when one has only a few such formulas in the spreadsheet, but it may cause problems if one requests hundreds of stock prices. 3) It also returns #Value on failure, which might not be what the user wants to see, if for whatever technical reason the web service fails. In that exceptional case, the user would generally prefer to get the most recent stock price than nothing at all.
If you would be willing to rely on external software, then the free addin Deriscope can bring live prices on global stocks asynchronously into Excel through the Alpha Vantage provider with only one minute time delay! It can be also configured to relay the most recent good price so that a value will always be returned even if internet connection is temporarily lost! If you are interested in US stocks and ETFs, Deriscope delivers true Real Time quotes (only one second delay) straight from IEX (The Investors Exchange) This video tutorial explains how this is done with regard to global stocks This video concerns real time US stock prices from IEX.
